The federal Department of Health, Disability and Ageing is working with state and territory governments to develop a National Allied Health Workforce Strategy.
The aim of this strategy is to:
- help to address national allied health workforce issues, including the shortage of allied health professionals in Australia
- consider how these issues vary across the allied health sector to better align the supply of allied health professionals with current and future needs
The strategy is expected to have a significant impact on the Australian healthcare system, including:

Addressing workforce shortages by identifying current and projected shortages of allied health professionals across different settings and specialties.

Promoting inter-professional collaboration between allied health professionals and other healthcare providers.

Optimising workforce distribution to ensure individuals in all communities have access to the allied health care they need, including in rural and remote areas.

Better supporting allied health professionals to deliver high-quality, evidence-based care through training, professional development, and support for career pathways
The draft strategy has now gone through its third round of public consultation, with responses currently being considered.
The strategy is expected to be finalised by the end of 2025.
